Even

Created in 2001, Meetic (of Match Group) is Europe’s largest producer of online dating platforms. They’ve managed to develop a dating service portfolio which caters to the various needs of users that span numerous demographics. In 2022, they contacted me to design a new dating app with them.

The Brief

Being a single parent can be really challenging. Having to juggle kids, their schedules, their own careers, and social lives leaves single parents with very little time for themselves, on top of the fact that society often tends to judge them for even thinking about dating again. For many single parents, finding another partner just isn’t in the cards as they’ve put the idea on hold. In addition to their vast portfolio of services, Meetic was prepared to create an entirely new dating app to better meet the specific needs of single parents.

The Solution

After participating in a cross-functional branding and identity workshop, I worked with the folks at Meetic to build Even from the ground up. Using the agile methodology, we built a cross-platform mobile application from MVP all the way through multiple iterations of an MMP. The final product is engineered specifically for single parents so that they may find their individuality again, so that they can be more than just parents.

User challenges

The Judgement & Compatibility Problem
Single parents struggle to meet people on other dating apps who accept them for who they really are, who share the same life priorities, often resulting in being ghosted.

Our Solutions
In addition to providing a dedicated app for single parents which acts as an initial filter, Even includes search filters specific to family situations and types of custody. Parent-oriented prompts make it possible to lean into who they really are.

The Lack of Seriousness Problem
Single parents feel like users on other dating apps aren’t as invested in their searches as they are, making little effort to fill out their profiles or looking for relationships which aren’t very serious.

Our Solutions
We put mechanisms into place which encourage users to take their experience seriously, such as the possibility to chat with other users only after matching, requiring a certain number of photos and profile content in order to use the app, and profile verification.

The Overwhelm Problem
With all that they juggle, single parents tend to have very limited free time and mental bandwidth to dedicate to dating.

Our Solutions
Even employs a clean, airy and modern UI design along with simple UX patterns so that users can perform key tasks quickly and easily. This is especially helpful for users who may have never used a dating app before because they’d been in a relationship for the last 10-15 years.

Onboarding

Signing up and creating one’s profile is quick and easy: straightforward, separate screens for each step help the process to feel digestible, and parents immediately feel at ease with specific questions geared towards their lifestyle.

User Profiles

For the single parents we interviewed, browsing profiles isn’t just about photos: before swiping left or right, they want to learn more about each member, to see how serious they are in their efforts, and if they share the same life priorities. That’s why we spent a lot of time optimizing the different types of information in profiles, striving for the right balance between photos and information.

Filters

Filters make it easy for single parents to see those profiles which best correspond with their priorities, saving them precious amounts of time.

Messages

In an effort to reduce unnecessary noise, conversations on Even can only begin once 2 users have matched, which is why we coupled the list of matches here with the list of conversations.

Here users have direct access to premium features, settings, and their profile, allowing them to optimize how they appear to other users as they please.

Design System

The foundation for a design system was put into place with the creation of shared Figma styles and an extensive component library. Extra care was taken to create Figma components with easy-to-use properties and variables, in addition to text and color styles which conform to Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
